More often than not, when making wine at home, printable wine labels are the last of your worries. Nevertheless, they are important for many reasons.

If you never used them before, this guide will show you how to choose the right one for your bottles, what characteristics to consider, and why to use them in the first place.

Why Use Printable Wine Labels

Every time I bottle a batch of wine, I use printable wine labels to identify it. The labels not only hold important information about the wine, but they also give the bottles a touch of style. In this way, I feel proud when giving a bottle or two to friends and family.

Apart from making a statement about your commitment as a passionate winemaker, printable wine labels can serve other purposes too.

For example, if you bought bottled wine to give as favors at an event, you might want to change the stock label with a custom one. For instance, if the wine is to be used at a wedding, you might want to write on the bottles the names of the spouses and the date.

You can also use printable wine labels to make a special bottle of wine for that special someone.

As you can see, printable wine labels can serve many purposes, you just have to choose the right ones. On the market, there are different types of printable wine labels, either blank or already decorated with artworks.

Blank labels give you the possibility to create the graphics from scratch. In this way, you’ll be able to use any theme you want and arrange the elements according to your wish. But if you’re looking for printable wine labels to stick on your freshly corked bottles, then you might want to consider the wide variety of labels decorated with graphics. On these labels, you’ll only have to print the information about your wine and they are ready to apply.

How To Choose The Right Printable Wine Labels’ Size

Regardless of what type of printable wine label you want, a thing to consider is the size. The size of the label compared to the size and type of the bottle. Here is a guide to choosing the right printable wine labels size.
  • check
Alsace bottle: Alsace bottles are probably the most commonly used for white wines. Typically suitable for Riesling and other sweet dessert wines, these bottles are also used for a wide variety of dry whites. For this type of bottle, choose a label of 3,5x4 inches.
  • check
Bordeaux bottle: Bordeaux bottles are the most versatile. They are tall, slim, suitable for reds but also for whites. The maximum size of label to use with this type of bottle is 4x6 inches.
  • check
Burgundy bottle: Burgundy bottles are usually used for Pinots, Barolo and Chardonnay wines. They are not suitable for labels higher that 4,5 inches and the perfect label for this type of bottle should measure 4x4 inches.
  • check
Champagne bottle: for Champagne bottles, labels measuring 4x4 inches are just right.
  • check
Rhone bottle: Rhone bottles are similar to Burgundy bottles. Usually used for Syrah wines, they are just right for labels measuring 3,5x4 inches.

How To Re-label The Labeled Bottles With Printable Wine Labels

You may want to re-label a bottle if you’ve decided to use old wine bottles for your batch or for other purposes. Regardless of why you want to apply a new label, you’ll have to remove the old label first.

At this stage, it’s important to make a note. You can re-label a bottle by simply sticking a larger label over the original one. However, I really don’t recommend it. Most of the times, the shape (and sometimes even the writing or graphics) of the old label will still be visible. This is unacceptable in all cases.

To remove the old label from the bottle you can use several simple methods. The only thing to consider is whether the bottle is empty or full.

In the case of empty bottles, you can remove the old labels either with dry heat or with hot water. Both methods are simple, and I’ve already explained you how to remove them in this article.

If the bottles are full, you can still use water, dish soap and baking soda, but the water has to be cold. In this case, there is no heat to melt the adhesive though, and the labels might be more difficult to remove. Another method is to remove the labels with a gel remover. I’ve never tried this method before but people claim it is truly effective and easy.

Once the old labels are removed and the bottles are shiny clean, stick on the new printable wine labels.

What To Write On Printable Wine Labels

Again, it depends why you’re labeling the bottles in the first place. If the labels are intended to give more personality to an event, write the date, the occasion, and any other information you might want your guests to remember.

If you’re making labels for your wine, then here is a list of things that should be on the labels:
  • check
Name of the wine: easy to understand, this is the actual name of the wine inside the bottle. The name is given by the grape variety or the fruit used to make the wine.
  • check
Winery or winemaker: this should be you. If you want to give a name to your cellar or basement, for example “Countryside House Winery”, state it on the labels.
  • check
Year of production: this is important to avoid mixing an old batch with a new one, and also to know for how long you’ve aged your reds.
  • check
Alcoholic concentration: this is also important, to determine the quality of the wine.
  • check
Region: the region where you’re located is important if you’ve used local grapes. If you’ve made wine from a kit, then you should find the source of the grapes on the kit’s information.
  • check
Volume: you should also state on the label how much wine is in the bottle.
